Work packages

WASTEWISE comprises six interrelated work packages:

The WP will pursue the following objectives:

  1. to map the full supply chain of high impact food categories to be used for assessing FW prevention and reduction actions and identify where the opportunities for waste prevention and reduction are higher;
  2. to map the state of the art on FW quantities and types at the EU level including collaboration in all MS to analyse their current FW monitoring approach;
  3. to bridge data gaps in existing EU-level statistics;
  4. to add information to the available data in order to create a dataset for assessing the potential for improving FW management policies in the EU.

The WP will pursue the following objectives:

  1. To develop a systematic approach for combining quantified FW data with environmental LCA data, with an adequate level of detail;
  2. To review suitable methodologies for assessing environmental rebound effects and impacts on biodiversity;
  3. To assess the current state of the environmental impacts of FW;
  4. To develop FW assessment in LCA.

The WP will pursue the following objectives:

  1. To identify the food categories that should be prioritised through FW prevention and reduction efforts in the EU, with an evidence-based approach;
  2. To design realistic scenarios of FW prevention and reduction to allow the progress towards EU climate targets;
  3. To assess the environmental impact related to the selected scenarios;
  4. To evaluate the environmental and socio-economic rebound effects related to FW in each scenario.

The WP will pursue the following objectives:

  1. to identify specific regulations on FW at EU and national level, as well as the single MS degree of inclusion in other environmental and energy regulations, including NECPs and the administrative context in which they are managed within the target MS indicated in T4.1;
  2. to propose specific improvements to the data reported by MS on FW for improved information quality and optimal integration for the calculation of its associated environmental impacts, through LCA methods;
  3. to promote dialogue among the various stakeholders in the agri-food chain for agreement on policy recommendations through the establishment of 5 WASTEWISE MAPs – Multi-Actor Platforms;
  4. to provide policy evidence-based recommendations to establish optimal integration of monitoring and minimization of FW within broader national environmental and energy policies (to be gathered in the final WASTEWISE White Paper for FW Management and Policies).

The WP will pursue the following objectives:

  1. To ensure effective communication and knowledge transfer, by setting up, updating and feeding the channels and tools needed for that;
  2. To create “public relations” in terms of building up and maintaining contacts with target groups and key stakeholders with the intention of engaging stakeholders and the public in all core aspects of the project;
  3. To raise public awareness about FW and promote general interest towards measures towards its prevention and reduction;
  4. To spread and disseminate the knowledge generated and the results obtained among scholars, policymakers and other specialised stakeholders, as well as promote networking and collaboration with projects working in the same field.
  5. To ensure efficient uptake and commercial exploitation of the project results;
  6. To manage IPR.

The WP will pursue the following objectives:

  1. to establish an efficient management structure to monitor the overall project implementation;
  2. to ensure early identification of problems and to enable timely contingency measures;
  3. to monitor overall scientific quality, leading to the achievement of project objectives and to the formulation of high-quality deliverables and conclusions;
  4. to ensure adequate communication flow among partners and with the EC; 5) to ensure efficient management of ethics issues.
