WASTEWISE presented at a meeting of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste

9 December 2025 By

On 9 December 2025, Hanna Hartikainen, from LUKE’s scientific coordination team of the WASTEWISE project, participated in the meeting of the Food Loss and Waste Monitoring Sub-Group of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste (9 December 2025). She presented recent findings from the study “Assessing edible food waste in the Finnish food system”. As part of her presentation, Hanna highlighted ongoing work within the WASTEWISE project.

One of the project’s upcoming reports, scheduled for publication next year and led by Claudia Giordano (Senior scientist, scientific coordination team), provides in-depth insights into how Member States currently report food waste data to the European Commission. The report offers a detailed review of national reporting practices. For this work, the team contacted 26 out of 27 EU Member States, as well as two associated countries, and conducted 18 semi-structured interviews with national experts.

The report presents new evidence on Member States’ sampling strategies, scaling-up methods, and interpretations of the Delegated Decision, highlighting significant differences across the EU. These findings will support future efforts to improve the consistency, transparency, and reliability of food waste data.

The WASTEWISE project looks forward to continuing its collaboration within the Platform and contributing to more harmonised food waste monitoring across Europe.
