On 23 April 2026, the WASTEWISE scientific coordinator Claudia Giordano, from LUKE, participated in the final conference of the Wasteless project, held in Brussels.

Her presentation, in which Mattias Eriksson also participated, focused on the work carried out in WASTEWISE to address key challenges and opportunities to improve food waste (FW) data collection across EU Member States. It explored both which data should be collected in addition to the ones that are currently collected by EUROSTAT, and how DATA collection systems can be strengthened to ensure greater accuracy, comparability, and policy relevance.

She proposed practical recommendations to harmonize methodologies through specific additions to the Commission Delegated Decision 2019/1597 format. Particular attention was given to statistical descriptors needed to improve future measurements.

The session aimed to contribute to more robust and consistent food waste data collection, ultimately supporting more effective prevention and reduction policies across Europe as foreseen by Directive (EU) 2025/1892.
