On 28 October, Manika Roediger from Agroscope participated in the AgroVet-Strickhof Tagung, which focused on this year’s central theme: ‘Location-Adapted Livestock Farming’. This annual event is designed to foster exchange between research and practice, and it brought together leading voices from science, government and industry.

Among the keynote speakers were Jean-Marc Chappuis, Deputy Director of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG), and the Dean of the VetSuisse Faculty of the University of Bern, alongside prominent practitioners such as the Head of Agricultural Affairs at Nestlé.

A poster session featuring 33 contributions showcased the diversity of current agricultural research in Switzerland. Topics ranged from studies on rabbits and alpacas to the genomic characterization of mastitis pathogens in cattle. Manika Roediger from Agroscope presented a poster on the mass flow of bovine meat in Switzerland from a food waste perspective — a project outcome of WASTEWISE.

The keynote speakers collectively emphasized that the research and endeavor to decrease food waste is an important pillar to ensure the sustainability of future food systems. The AgroVet-Strickhof Tagung once again confirmed its role as a vital platform for bringing together research, policy and practice to advance sustainable agriculture in Switzerland.
