Policy meeting between PRECIOUS and WASTEWISE

On 19 May, members of both PRECIOUS HORIZON and WASTEWISE projects met with representatives of the European Commission to discuss preliminary recommendations on food waste for policymakers.

The meeting was held in a collaborative atmosphere, and both the presentations and the subsequent question-and-answer session were both very productive. The recommendations proposed by WASTEWISE are as follows:

1.- Revise Delegated Decision 2019/1597 to improve and harmonise food waste reporting methodologies across Member States.

2.- Provide Member States with technical support and develop indicators that convert food waste quantities into environmental and nutritional impacts.

3.- Integrate food waste policies with related EU frameworks to strengthen policy coherence and effectiveness.

4.- Propose a coherence policy analysis between the aforementioned normative and its implementation at national level.

5.- Develop more holistic reduction pathways that cover the entire supply chain rather than only parts of it, including pre-harvest and harvest stages within primary production.

6.- Establish common non-binding KPIs and good practices to support better monitoring and evaluation of food waste policies.
